Corinne Bailey Rae

"The reason I am a member of Amnesty is because it acts as conscience for the world. It campaigns and screams and weeps and protests against injustice; it shames unjust governments, sets prisoners free , and promotes true freedom. Doing this one song was a small way to raise money for amnesty. It's appropriate that it was written by someone one stood with civil rights campaigners, the black panthers, students, hippies and war veterans to campaign for peace. I was happy to do it. Plus , what a great song!"

Corinne Bailey Rae grew up in Leeds (UK), honing her musical skills on a diet of classical music (she studied violin to high standard), classic rock (Led Zeppelin), female noiseniks (Veruca Salt and L7) and old-school jazz. When EMI spotted her in 2005, she was already an exceptional soulful songstress. Her style merges the spirit of Billie Holiday with the statuesque soul of Erykah Badu.
With a no.1 debut album nearing triple platinum in the UK, further gold and platinum sales awards across the globe including over a million in America where Corinne's debut created history by entering the Billboard chart at 17 (the highest ever chart entry for a UK artist's debut album in the US), Corinne Bailey Rae is set to have the world at her feet. Add to all this a whole host of awards including Mojo and Q Awards for Best Newcomer, two MOBO Awards and now three Grammy nominations, a string of sold out tour dates, praises including Billboard magazine hailing her debut album as one of the albums of 2006, Corinne now sits firmly amongst the ranks of established artists she once aspired to be.
