In some countries, up to 69% of women have been physically assaulted by their male partners.

But some of these women can now see hope again thanks to your support.

UPDATE! (March 2007)

Positive changes following web action

In a bid to tackle domestic violence, we've asked you to join in the chorus of protest and make some noise to say enough is enough. Whether you've joined our virtual march, sent emails of support to shelter initiatives or petitioned to make women's welfare a reality, you have made a difference.

In Belgium, the Minister of Social Affairs who was the target of an online action, sent a letter only two days after the action was launched. The Minister acknowledged the need to fund support structures, and offered an exceptional help of 10,000 Euros to the shelter featured in the 16 stories.

In Denmark, the online action received extensive media coverage, prompting the Minister of Refugee, Immigration and Integration to officially announce she would look further into the problems of battered migrant women. The Dannershusets Shelter showcased in the 16 stories was overwhelmed by the support it received. “We are receiving support from all over the world to our work. It’s simply amazing!”

Keep Making Some Noise to end violence against women. Take action now!

Domestic violence, a global human rights issue

At least 1 in 3 women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime, usually by someone known to her.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone should enjoy human rights without discrimination.

The Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) Committee defines violence against women as "a form of discrimination against women". The convention requires states to "take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women by any person, organisation or enterprise"

Amnesty International calls on all governments to face up to their human rights obligations and act immediately! Providing support services and places of safety for women fleeing domestic violence is one of the many urgent actions that need to be taken.
