Afro-Reggae: This is Music with a Message
“We've seen how easy it is to get a gun, whether it be on the streets of Rio, Los Angeles or London. So join us and the Control Arms campaign by adding your face to the Million Faces petition.”
-- Junior, Afro-Reggae

AfroReggae and Make Some Noise

The arms trade is out of control. Every year roughly half a million men, women and children are killed by armed violence - that's one person every minute.

In the favelas (shanty-towns) of Brazil, inhabitants are deprived of effective police protection and suffer the greatest concentrations of homicides and violent crime. This is where Brazilian hip-hop group AfroReggae have chosen to make a difference – using music and dance to offer street kids a way out of poverty, crime and violence.

Formed in 1995 out of dance and percussion workshops in the favela of Vigário Geral in Rio de Janeiro, AfroReggae use a mix of hip-hop, street theatre, and Brazilian dance to empower marginalized youth. Now they've come to London for a series of drumming workshops and concerts, culminating in two shows at the Barbican Centre on March 2 and 3.

In their exclusive recording for Make Some Noise, AfroReggae have transformed the classic “Imagine” with a funky, soulful sound. The track was recently premiered at Rio's Copacabana Beach on February 18 to over 2 million people opening for none other than the Rolling Stones.

So check out AfroReggae's new video and download their exclusive cover of "Imagine" in support of Amnesty International.
