"That song has such a bittersweet quality. That's why it's my favorite Christmas song. It seems appropriate for the song to be a part of the make some noise record considering the time of year"
- Maroon 5's Adam Levine on Happy Xmas (War is Over)
It seems like you can't turn on the radio these days without hearing Maroon 5. Signed to Indie Octone Records in early 2002, the band is made up of Adam Levine on vocals, guitarist Jesse Carmichael, bassist Mickey Madden, drummer Ryan Dusick, and guitarist Jesse Valentine. They hit the road in early 2002 - not behind their chart-topping debut album Songs About Jane, as they say, but nearly a half year before its release - and they haven't stopped yet. The album was released in June of 2002, and it didn't enter Billboard's Top 200 chart until nearly a year later. Since then, of course, it hasn't budged for close to 90 consecutive weeks as this is written.
This breakthrough album has yielded a pair of chart-topping singles. This Love, earned Maroon 5 a Best New Artist Moon Man at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards; the other, She Will Be Loved, received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals (the band was also nominated for Best New Artist). Between them, the two smashes held strong for 10 weeks in 2004, as well as dominating the Modern AC, Hot AC and Adult Top 40 charts. With a Grammy for Best New Artist of 2005, Songs About Jane going triple-platinum in the U.S. and racking up another 3 million sales in the rest of the world, it looks like all the hard work has paid off.
